UCLU InspireMEdicine Conference

The Medical Student has partnered up with UCLU MedSoc to bring you all the latest news on the InspireMEdicine conference. Expect further articles and tweets updating you as the day goes on. Stay tuned!

So we’ve all made it to destination: ‘medical school’ but has the shine of that acceptance letter started to wear off? Are you lost in a sea of SBAs, OSCEs and medical acronyms? Have you forgotten why you wanted that coveted offer in the first place? If any of this rings true then please read on. We at UCLU Medicainspire posterl Society are proud to present our first National Student Careers Conference: InspireMEdicine on Saturday 8th March at University College London. The aim of the conference is to energise and enthuse medical students across the country about the career that they have embarked upon. We identified that this zest for medicine is often lost along the journey and it can seem that destination after destination is an exam or ePortfolio milestone. This is the case if we allow tunnel vision to prevail but there is so much more that students can do along their career journey. This is exactly what we want to showcase.

In addition to this, at times there seems to be an urgency to show ‘commitment to specialty’ but how do run before you’ve learnt to walk? The set up of our medical society allows us to reflect the many career routes and specialties that our medical career offers us. On the day you will be given the opportunity to attend two break-out workshops, that you have selected in advance, in a specialty of your choosing. Workshops on offer will include: Anaesthetics; Global Health; General Medicine; Infectious Disease; Medical Education; Medical Leadership & Management; Neurology; Obstetrics & Gynaecology; Oncology; Orthopaedics; Paediatrics; Psychiatry and Sport & Exercise Medicine. The fact that this is a non-specialty focused conference will allow you the time to explore different specialties on the same day and it is unique in this regard.

Aside from the workshops there will also be central events for all delegates held in the historic Cruciform Building. We are thrilled are to announce that our Key Note Speaker is Professor Sir Simon Wessely MA BM BCh MSc MD FRCP FRCPsych FMedSci FKC. He is the President-Elect at the Royal College of Psychiatrists, Head of the Department of Psychological Medicine and Vice Dean for Academic Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry. He is well known for his work in military health and we look forward to hearing his inspiring research tales in this field as well as psychiatry as a whole.

This will be followed by three dynamic clinicians giving us a snapshot of their ‘most inspiring case’. Dr Nisha Shah has given us the following teaser ahead of the conference: “The case I will present is of an extraordinary woman who proved a large number of healthcare and other professionals (e.g. police and social services) wrong, and taught me that it is always worth putting up a fight for what you believe is right, even when you are massively outnumbered!” We can’t wait to hear her case!

The afternoon will see our Debating Section host: ‘This House Believes that the Future of Medicine is Mechanics not Organics’ with leaders in each respective field battling it out. Our Enterprise & Innovation section will follow this up with a “Dragon’s Den style” competition for students with ideas for the world of medical innovation; whether that be an app, device or book. Our expert judges will pick the best three ideas via an online application process ahead of the conference and three lucky students can pitch their ideas on the day with the opportunity to win a cash prize and the chance to have a mentor guide them on an innovation journey. The conference will conclude with a drinks & networking reception.

The day promises to be fun-packed and full of inspiring stories, interactions and events. Let InspireMEdicine help guide your future career path.
